What Is JUPEB? The Complete Guide, Plus Every School With JUPEB Forms Open (2026/2027)
Imagine writing one set of exams and skipping an entire year of university. That is the quiet promise of JUPEB, and every October thousands of candidates go looking for it at once.
What Is JUPEB?
JUPEB stands for the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board. It runs an advanced-level programme for people who want to enter a Nigerian university without going through UTME. You study for several months at an affiliated school or study centre, write the JUPEB national examination, and if you do well you seek direct entry into 200 Level. The board was approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria on 30 December 2013 and formally set up on 4 April 2014 by ten partnering Nigerian universities, according to the OAU JUPEB page. Many more universities have joined since. Candidates sit three subjects plus a General Studies course, and you must still meet the extra conditions of the university you choose. The board’s own site is jupeb.edu.ng.
How Long Does It Take?
The board’s rule is a minimum of one academic session of two semesters. In practice, private study centres describe about nine months with lectures from Monday to Friday, while FUNAI describes ten months. The exact length depends on the school you choose.
Who Is JUPEB For?
- School leavers who want to skip 100 Level.
- Candidates whose UTME score did not reach the cut-off for the course they want.
- Candidates who missed this year’s degree admission window, like the one FUNAI closed on 12 October.
- Anyone who would rather prepare through a structured programme than rewrite UTME.
JUPEB Or Pre-Degree?
They sound alike and they are not. According to FUNAI’s notice, JUPEB prepares you for direct entry into 200 Level, while Pre-Degree prepares you for 100 Level in all disciplines except Medicine and Surgery. Ask each school which one fits your course.
What You Usually Need
Schools set their own rules, but the pattern is similar. FUNAI asks for five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, at a maximum of two sittings. OOU asks for five credits with English and Mathematics. FUOYE asks for five relevant O’Level subjects. Always match your subjects to the course you want.

Entry Is Still Competitive
A JUPEB certificate does not guarantee a place in 200 Level. FUNAI describes admission for courses like Law, Medicine and Nursing Science as keenly competitive. Choose your course carefully, study seriously and apply to the school that offers it.
Avoid Costly Mistakes
- Pay only on the school’s official portal.
- Ignore anyone who sells forms for a school, since FUNAI has said it authorises no agents.
- Keep your receipt and application number.
- Use a valid email address and a phone number you can answer, because invitations come by email.
