Dr Donatus Ilang: Ebonyi State's Commissioner For Primary And Secondary Education
Recognised by Nkuzify as Leading Teachers and Educators of the Year.
Behind every classroom there is a system, and somebody has to run it. On this World Teachers' Day, Nkuzify looks at Dr Donatus Ilang, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Primary and Secondary Education, one of the leaders who run Nigeria's education systems.
Who He Is
Dr Donatus Chukwuma Ilang was one of the commissioners sworn in by Governor Francis Nwifuru in June 2023, first to lead Border Peace and Conflict Resolution. In the July 2025 reshuffle he swapped places with Professor Paul Awo Nwobasi, which put him in charge of Primary and Secondary Education. When the governor reshuffled the cabinet again on 29 June 2026, coverage of the exercise still listed Dr Ilang as the Commissioner for Primary and Secondary Education.
The Ministry of Education's own website credits his tenure with the Ebonyi Digital Education Platform, which offers computer-based test practice, video classrooms and digital libraries to students, and says construction has started on 39 model secondary schools across the state.
Why Nkuzify celebrates him. Primary and secondary classrooms are where a child's journey begins, and where many of the teachers in this series spend their days. A state platform that puts practice tests and video lessons in front of every student speaks to what we do at Nkuzify every day, and Ebonyi is the state where we met many of the teachers on this page.
Where this comes from: AllAfrica (June 2023), Tribune Online (July 2025), The Guardian (June 2026) and Ebonyi State Ministry of Education.
