Dr Tunji Alausa: Nigeria's Minister Of Education
Recognised by Nkuzify as Leading Teachers and Educators of the Year.
Behind every classroom there is a system, and somebody has to run it. On this World Teachers' Day, Nkuzify looks at Dr Tunji Alausa, Nigeria's Minister of Education, one of the leaders who run Nigeria's education systems.
Who He Is
Some ministers arrive with a teaching background. Dr Tunji Alausa arrived from the hospital ward. He is a medical doctor who specialises in kidney care, and he was born on 18 April 1965. He first served as Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, and on 23 October 2024 he was redeployed to the Federal Ministry of Education, replacing Tahir Mamman.
People who follow his work say he brings a doctor's habits to the job: look at the symptoms first, then decide the treatment. A January 2026 report on AllAfrica says he leads the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, a plan with six pillars, and that primary school subjects were cut down for the 2025/26 session so that pupils carry less and learn more practical skills, including digital literacy. ThisDay's review of his first stretch in office adds that fees for technical and vocational education were removed. In April 2026, Independent Newspapers named him Most Innovative Cabinet Minister of the Year for 2025.
Why Nkuzify celebrates him. Digital Literacy is one of the subjects we teach, so it is a joy to see a minister push digital skills and practical learning into what Nigerian children are taught. We celebrate him because he is trying to change both the bag a child carries to school and the lessons inside it.
