EBSU Just Added 7 New Health Courses, And Two Of Them Are Doctorates
Missed the Medicine cut-off and thinking your health career is over? Hold on. Ebonyi State University (EBSU) in Abakaliki has just been approved to start seven new health science programmes for 2026/2027, and two of them are doctorate-level degrees that most students have never even heard of.

The Seven New Programmes
The National Universities Commission (NUC) approved these programmes for EBSU, under Prof. M. U. Awoke. The announcement was signed by Assoc. Prof. B. N. Ukwah, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology.

Where These Courses Can Take You
Physiotherapy and Optometry graduates normally register with their national regulators: the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board and the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board. Radiography is regulated by the Radiographers Registration Board. The other four are the prevention and data side of healthcare, which every hospital and health agency needs.
Why This Matters
Ebonyi has a big gap between the healthcare people need and the trained staff available. The university says these programmes are meant to help address that in Ebonyi State, Nigeria and beyond. They are also allied health courses outside Medicine and Nursing, where competition is fiercest. For a candidate who missed a Medicine cut-off, they are real professional routes, not consolation prizes.
EBSU is not alone. UNN has approval for 12 new programmes, Federal University Dutse for 30, and COOU for 15. Universities are racing to add courses before the 2026/2027 cycle closes.
The Catch: Approval Is Not Accreditation
Campus Info Nigeria’s headline calls it accreditation, but the reports themselves describe NUC approval to start the programmes. Accreditation is a later stage, after the programme has run and been inspected. Before you commit to a professional course, ask how the faculty plans to meet NUC and regulator requirements.
What To Do Now

- Confirm your JAMB subject combination. I could not find published combinations or cut-offs for these seven programmes. Check the JAMB brochure and EBSU's official notices, and treat third-party sites as unofficial.
- Expect small quotas. New programmes often start with few places, which makes them competitive.
