JAMB Plans a UTME Centre in Canada: What It Means for Nigerians Abroad
JAMB says it is working towards a UTME centre in Ottawa, Canada, expected to start operating in 2027. The board shared the plan on its official social media pages after a visit by its Registrar. The aim is to let Nigerians living in Canada sit the exam without travelling to Nigeria just for it.
Who is it for?
The centre is meant for eligible Nigerians in Canada and elsewhere in North America who want admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions. A family in Toronto, Calgary or even the United States could in future sit the UTME in Ottawa instead of flying home for a single exam.
Is this a new exam?
No. JAMB is not introducing a separate exam for Nigerians abroad, and it already conducts the UTME outside Nigeria. The Ottawa plan extends where candidates can sit the same exam.
What is not yet confirmed
- It is a proposed centre. Its start in 2027 depends on completing the process required to set it up.
- The usual UTME requirements still apply.
- JAMB has not yet published the details, such as the exact venue, fees, registration steps and exam dates for Canada.
Mixed reactions at home
Not everyone has welcomed the news. Some Nigerians online asked why JAMB is going abroad while candidates at home still have unresolved name-correction issues. That concern is fair, and it is worth watching how JAMB handles both.
What should you do now?
- If you are in Canada or North America, follow JAMB's official channels for the announcement of dates and fees.
- Do not pay anyone who claims to be registering you for the Canada centre before JAMB publishes the process.
- If you are in Nigeria, nothing changes for your UTME. Keep preparing, and practise with the Nkuzify quizzes.
We will update this post when JAMB releases the full details.
